unreal expectations...

Think about your skill toolbox. I have been an exercise scientist, bench scientist, chiropractor, medical writer, pharma data scientist, geospatial data scientist and most recently the manifestation of all of these Bonnys in service of generating stories and speaking to you from around the globe.

You have your own list and I argue that your younger self and her fevered antics likely serve you well here in the present tense. Unreal Engine and Cesium Ion are the dynamic duo for highlighting the role of place in architecture and urban environments.

Working with 3D worlds in open source environments has been rewarding and challenging. The first data visualization most of us recall is likely a map. Hard for many of you to imagine but we were distracted drivers also. Not in the same doom scrolling and stupid phone distractions archetype but dear reader we were reading paper maps speeding down the highway to places we had no idea how to find.

Drop a pin (lat & long) into Cesium Georeference in Unreal Engine and you can interact with Cesium Ion Assets and generate accurate and timely visualizations of spatial intelligence. Static maps are often still life images in the same way as viewed in the art world. Once you add the cinematic, you are more than the frame of the story — you are able to view the urban environment and persistent infrastructure limitations.

Unreal Engine is a beast and you will need a decent amount of compute power. Even with my ethernet and high speed set up I downgraded to a level below the latest version. MacOs had a few glitches and work arounds I figured out in the long run but it doesn’t seem efficient to spend 2 hours creating a snippet of a video that will run for at most 2 minutes in my talk.

But if you are persistent and go a little deeper into the learning curve — there is much to gain. We often think learning needs to be quick or easy. I suggest those are unreal expectations and much can be learned with patience and persistence.
